$10,000 AT&T Grant Brings MEO’s ‘Camp Hope’ to Life - Hawaii

"Maui Economic Opportunity, Inc. (MEO) is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from AT&T.

"MEO Youth Services will hold an educational and healthy activity camp called Camp HOPE Maui in July for children exposed to high-risk behaviors....

“A growing body of research, including the Kauai Longitudinal Study, demonstrates that children with adverse childhood experiences can overcome this trauma with interventions that include activities that promote resiliency, competency, and self-esteem, and “turning point” or “second chance” opportunities during critical transitional times, particularly early in their lives. The Kauai Study found that early childhood experiences of trauma were high-risk factors for adolescent and adult criminal behavior, however, having just one positive, long-term relationship with a parent, family member, or community member (coach, mentor, counselor, minister, teacher) could override the risk factors.

“Providing Maui County youth with an evidence-based proven model to increase awareness, educate and provide Hope for a brighter future is what Camp Hope is all about. AT&T is a partner in our community’s future,” reports, MEO Youth Services director Angela McClure."
