4th Annual ACEs Forum Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Arizona ACE Consortium

Community leaders and members of the Arizona ACE Consortium, along with City of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and First Lady Nicole Stanton, came together on October 3rd to hear leading voices in the ACEs movement - Vincent Felitti, MD and Nadine Burke Harris, MD - discuss the impact of ACEs and toxic stress, and explore what's needed to promote resilience in individuals and communities.  Local experts addressing the opioid epidemic also highlighted the connection between ACEs and addiction.

Feedback from one attendee: “This was the very first time I have seen a group in Arizona make trauma and ACE’s the focal point on the opioid crisis. The very first time in six years that I have seen THE very solution to this epidemic come front and center in Arizona. Today was the day that Arizona has been waiting for, for a very long time. What you did here will be pivotal. National and local subject matter experts coming together across pediatrics, primary care providers, mental health/behavioral health treatment, harm reduction and government leaders for the why, what and how we address the greatest public health crisis we’ve ever seen. It’s exactly what this state needed.”

It has been absolutely amazing to see the ACEs movement spread all over the US. Programs such as the Arizona ACE Consortium and Peace4Tarpon are having a huge impact on their communities, and are providing an example that can be followed.  32 states now provide the ACE questions as part of their annual BRFSS (state health risk factor analysis) and -- low and behold -- the World Health Organization just adopted and adapted ACE questions to health surveys taken all around this planet.

Congratulations!  This sounds like a powerfully transformative conference!   Reframing the opioid crisis in terms of ACEs is so timely and critical to successfully addressing the multigenerational impact of substance abuse.  I am looking forward to hearing about how the learnings from this conference inform future policy and practice.  Well done!
