A big NY Times story just came out about a talented young woman who ended up schizophrenic and homeless. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/0...&WT.nav=top-news Buried in the article is that she was repeatedly sexually abused as a child. But the bulk of the article is about people trying to help her and not much mentioned about childhood trauma and links to mental illness.
Another thing: this woman was a college classmate of my sister who she remembers as someone with "unusual presence" and "exuded talent." She also tells me about an article about homeless people sleeping outside a church in gentrified Brooklyn about 2 years ago. "They mentioned Nakesha briefly as one of the homeless. But it wasn’t a flattering portrait of any of them. So I wrote to the journalists and priest and the church basically saying shame on you. That Nakesha was smart and talented and went to Williams and was diagnosed with schizophrenia after we graduated and I asked if at any point they considered who these “huddled” people dirtying this pretty Brooklyn church were."
It is so important that these stories are made out to be more than about "homelessness" or "mental illness."
