An overview of the life course perspectives and its applications to some of the most active areas of investigation in the maternal and child health (MCH) field is provided. The eight fundamental principles and concepts in life course theory are explained, as well as contemporary applications in the areas of preconception health and well-being, the long-terms effects of adverse childhood experiences, and the fetal origins of adult disease. Implications for MCH are discussed. Numerous references.
