ACE Study Question

As I continue to present the results of the ACE study to various groups a question came up about whether the authors ever asked survey participants if they had ever received any type of therapy or treatment  for the ACE's they recorded in the study. I always assumed that  most of the survey respondents did not receive any assistance but thought I would check to see if that assumption is correct. So does anyone have any information about this?

Overwhelmingly, NO.  A good part because these events occurred on average a half century ago when the idea of psychotherapy for a kid was pretty radical.  Much better to just not mention it and "...the kid will grow out of it."  Also, most patients don't see the relationship to current events like biomedical disease, social malfunction, etc.  Of those patients with psychiatric hospital admittances, I routinely ask if childhood experiences ever came up.  The answer is overwhelmingly No.  If a few instances where a patient was so bold as to bring them up, the response uniformly was, "Well, you have a lot of current problems.  Let's deal with those first.  Then, if there's time, we'll get to your childhood. "  It was like treating the smoke in a house fire because that was the most obvious issue.
