Children with mental illness in the border region are largely underserved.
Just under 11 percent of Texas high school students report that they have made a suicide attempt in the past 12 months. Each time I come across this statistic I find it to be just as shocking as the first time I heard it.
As someone whose entire career has been in the area of children's mental health and who has witnessed the devastating effects of things like trauma, depression, psychosis and rejection firsthand, it's still very difficult to think that one in every nine students in our community high schools has made an effort to take her or his life in the past year.
