JUNEAU — Childhood trauma can cause serious health problems that last into adulthood and even future generations, reports the Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (ABADA) and the Alaska Mental Health Board (AMHB) today.
The boards’ report, “Adverse Childhood Experiences: Overcoming ACEs in Alaska,” summarizes medical research and data for Alaska and other states. The report also discusses social and economic impacts and strategies to reduce harm.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found links between adverse childhood experiences and many poor social, economic and health outcomes, from low earning power to high rates of chronic diseases and suicide. ACEs include growing up with different types of abuse and witnessing domestic violence.
