An Incredible example of Resilience and Deep Rooted Compassion........a Parent's Love

I am moved emotionally each time I have exchanged email with this incredible family. I have tried to be a support for them and the horrible consequences of "High Stakes" testing. Each time I reach out to them, they reach back and touch my life in a very special way. I want to be their support and mom turns around and becomes my support. They are survivors of ACE's, but the brain development did not get hardwired for being able to work with abstract concepts, but her writing ability is off the charts! Every principal in our state needs to look in the mirror as well as the policy makers that have driven so hard to push their "Ideology" forward....willing to fail students like this special young lady. I pray for this family daily, they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect....who has failed who? Hi Jim, Good to hear from you as always. Yes, I have been aware of the RCW since before Spring break. I knew that my daughter would not qualify because of her low grades in mathematics, always brought her GPA down considerably. As for school's not offering support to children, XXXXXXXX School certainly falls into that category. That is my major complaint, the principal and counselor never, ever, mentioned alternatives or guidance with the collection of evidence, and that was and should have been offered at the beginning of the school year.........if they cared about these kids graduating. I had to work around their narrow mindedness and find my own alternatives. The education system here is beyond archaic. They are more concerned about kids 'grinding' at dances then they are about kids graduating......makes a lot sense doesn't it? I attended my daughter's academic fair at her college the other day. She has a core class called 'The Epic and the Everyday," combines creative writing, studying the greek classics, and film. Next year she will be attending a semester in Florence for creative writing!!! I'm super excited for her future. Even though her school years have been difficult, she learned valuable life lessons and they will serve her well in a positive way. We have much to thank you for. Your kindness, compassion, and understanding has meant so very much to my family. It will not be forgotten. You have helped many, many, children and their families, so, in that respect you have won this battle. Take good care of yourself, and I think you are way overdue for a vacation...am sure your wife thinks the same:) XXXXXX

I felt so blessed to have met this incredible survivor. When I didn't think I had much more to offer, I would think of this family and re-fuel. One of the toughest email message I have ever sent.....was telling her that we lost and how difficult it was for me to know that her daughter was not going to be honored for her incredible resilence and gifted talent. I haven't been able to get my blog with the questions that need to be answered out to general public. I get a lot of contact from Twitter but we are all fighting the same fight only in different states. Great suggestion, just don't know how to or who to contact. I think with next week's graduations on the west side of state, we are going to be hearing more about the punitive policy. Most impacted regions are on the west side where it is highly populated. Blessings, Jim

How wonderful to see this, Jim. Great example of a parent taking positive steps to help her child after seeing the absurdity of an education "system" that fails children. Wish all the kids who were refused graduation had family members who could be this resourceful - I wonder if there is a way to "match" these kids and their parents with volunteers who can see outside the box and help. I wonder if the homeschooling / unschooling community could be a resource to them? (I homeschooled my own kids years ago and I'm in touch with some homeschooling organizations.)
