Trauma shapes the brain in ways that can make it hard to get past a fight, flight or freeze reaction.
Appomattox County Schools held a training Monday to help about 150 teachers and counselors understand how past traumatic experiences can impact a person’s ability to behave and learn, and how better to respond to someone whose fight, flight or freeze response has kicked in.
The training ties into a growing trend of schools and organizations trying to become “trauma informed,” in light of research showing the potentially devastating impact of childhood trauma upon future health and life outcomes.
A year or so ago, Appomattox County High School assistant principal David Read and other division staff saw clinical social worker Allison Sampson-Jackson speak in Richmond.
