Bearing witness to trauma among offenders: harnessing the Adverse Childhood Experiences evidence for better outcomes (Jane Mulcahy via YouTube & online).

This is a talk by Jane Mulcahy of the University College Cork, Ireland. This video was just published on YouTube today by the National Health Scotland today.

Mulcahy talks about how and what to talk ACEs, in general, as well as specifically as relates to relating with offenders. Here are some quotes:

"Basically, there is something therapeutic about being asked about your life story."

"With the telling of your adversity, somehow the trauma can be somewhat lessened just by having people listen, just by having people acknowledge what is wrong and should have never happened in the first place."

"We need to actually try and behave differently - check our own bad behaviors."

"It's not about blaming people, it's not about blaming the moms."

"It's fundamentally unethical for us not to ask about ACEs in whatever context. It's controversial because a lot of people just don't want to do it. They feel uncomfortable themselves about hearing about peoples pain."

"Most of us have our safety needs met. But there are some people that don't, and they end up in our prisons, basically."

"It is a political issue. It's a moral issue. It all begins with the family and how we choose to support families, or not."

Cissy's note: For those also new to her work (like), who want to learn more, here's a pdf of the same name with more details and references.

A recent publication of an ACE screen done of English speaking Nigerian Prisoners may offer some comparable data. Sorry I don't recall the journal or author, at this time.

Robert:
You are a human encyclopedia of amazing knowledge. I found one study from 2015 that may be what you are referring to. Is this is? A Validation of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale in Nigeria. Anyhow, thanks for all of your comments and all you share.
