This is a recording of a 30-minute presentation on child maltreatment that State of Alaska epidemiologist Dr. Jared Parrish gave to the Alaska Resilience Initiative steering committee in mid-May.
The dataset he used, based on linkages of multiple surveys and reporting systems, provides the most complete picture of ongoing child maltreatment of any longitudinal cohort in the United States. Alaska’s data is so comprehensive thanks not only to these data linkages but also to a uniquely Alaskan data source: the Alaska Permanent Fund program. Alaskan residents voluntarily register for the Permanent Fund Dividend program on an annual basis in order to receive funds; this allows us to determine when children have left the state, and therefore account for attrition in the longitudinal dataset.
Although our instances of child maltreatment and ACEs in Alaska are higher than the national average, this presentation serves as an excellent resource for anyone seeking a “big picture” image of cumulative child maltreatment over the life course, and variables such as maternal stressors that are predictive of maltreatment. We in Alaska are so fortunate to have Jared Parrish, an epidemiologist, linking family circumstances, ACEs, and outcomes, so that we can direct our work towards what will have the most significant impact.
