Building Individual and Community Well-Being: The Community Resiliency Model

The Trauma Informed Health Care Education and Research (TIHCER) Collaborative presents,

Elaine Miller-Karas, LCSW, and Dr. Lindy Grabbe, who will share their experiences in cultivating well-being in individuals and communities using the Community Resiliency Model (CRM).  They will share the basic tenets of the Community Resiliency Model, which is based on cutting-edge neuroscience and teaches six wellness skills to restore the mind, body, and spirit to well-being during or after a stressful or traumatic experience. The Community Resiliency Model is biologically based, educating about the autonomic nervous system, how the body responds to stress, and how it can be restored to balance. CRM has been brought to more than 75 countries and integrated into various social service and governmental agencies, including the Juvenile Justice system in Georgia, hospitals, primary care clinics, social service agencies, and school systems.

Elaine Miller-Karas, LCSW, is a trauma therapist, author, lecturer, consultant, radio show host, Psychology Today blogger, and social entrepreneur.  She is the co-founder and the Director of Innovation of the Trauma Resource Institute. She is the key developer of the Trauma and Community Resiliency Models. The models have been introduced to over 75 countries. Elaine’s book, Building Resiliency to Trauma, the Trauma and Community Resiliency Models® (2015), was selected by the United Nations and Taylor and Francis curated online library as one of the innovations helping meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Lindy Grabbe is a board-certified Family and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Professor Emeritus at Emory University School of Nursing. Her clinical expertise is in primary care and mental health care for underserved women and youth, providing Community Resilience Model (CRM) training in group settings.  Her interests include public mental health, trauma-informed care, the neurobiology of trauma and resilience, social justice, and the social determinants of mental health.  Dr. Grabbe’s published work includes The Trauma Resiliency Model: A “Bottom-Up” Intervention for Trauma Psychotherapy and research on the impact of a brief Community Resiliency Model training on the wellbeing of women in substance abuse treatment, as well as two randomized controlled trials of the Community Resiliency Model on wellbeing, resiliency, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress in front-line health workers. She is on the University of New Mexico ECHO team for the Behavioral Health Professional Workforce Resiliency Program, teaches police and corrections officers for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and is currently teaching the Community Resiliency Model to teenagers in Georgia’s Juvenile Justice facilities.
