Can Spanking REALLY Cause Brain Damage?

An interview with Dr. Martin Teicher, Neuroscientist, Researcher on Early Abuse & Neglect and the Effects on Brain Development.

Having read the avalanche of research on spanking and the link to negative outcomes, as well as the research showing brain alterations in children who are harshly spanked (with an implement) or spanked before age one, I am convinced that spanking is an ACE.

Spanking can cause brain damage.  Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff's recent research shows that the warmth of the mother does NOT mitigate the negative outcomes associated with spanking.  It makes sense when you understand that if the mother is the source of the threat, she is creating an ambiguous relationship with her child.

His penultimate comment got me -- about how people say spanking was the best thing that ever happened to them and that they were planning on doing the same with their children, even after seeing the damage done to their brains. I've heard and seen that response before, even from people who've been spanked by teachers & principals. Maybe it's a subtle form of Stockholm Syndrome. Most children want to love their parents, and thus excuse harm that they do. The ultimate identification with people who do harm is to excuse it and pass it on.

I am launching a fundraising film clip using the crowdfunding application "Fundrazr" beginning next week. Is there any way that it could be included in your weekly update? I can send you a link for you to preview it in the next few days if you send me your email address. It is for the purpose of raising money, but it as is for raising awareness.
Dr. Teicher's thinking is so incredibly clear. It was such a privilege to spend time with him. I also feel that there has been very little published on this topic, so I was thrilled to capture his thoughts on film.
