Child Abuse May Shorten Some Women's Lives [Consumer.Healthday.com]

Women who suffered physical or emotional abuse as children often die at a younger age than other women, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that among nearly 6,300 middle-aged U.S. adults, female survivors of child abuse were more likely to die over the next 20 years, versus other women.

And the worse the abuse was, the greater the impact appeared to be on a woman's life span. Those who said they'd suffered severe physical abuse were 58 percent more likely to die during the study period, compared with women with no history of child abuse.

Experts said the findings, published online Aug. 17 inJAMA Psychiatry, highlight the lasting and extensive effects of child abuse.

Previous research had already shown that survivors of abuse are at risk of poorer physical and mental health as adults.

Almost every morning I think about kids in Syria or kids in troubled families or adults who are still reverberating from their adverse childhoods. We're making small steps now, but the more we do, the faster we'll go.

I'm so sorry that you experienced such a dissonant childhood, Gertrude. And I'm glad that you're alive to still influence changes so that it doesn't happen to other kids. I hope you keep going, even if it can be incredibly tiring. Every voice matters.

The senseless wars in the world, more then 72 invasions into sovereign countries by the USA, trigger my childhood abuse and traumas daily. To a point i can't stand it anymore. Pictures of dead or dying children, dead by famines in Yemen, in Syria by bombs, in Vietnam still by Agent Orange cause me to not even understand why childabuse is still being debated in the western world on the level it is, when apparently it is close your eyes when it comes to children from some other country, some other people, some other religion. Reminding me of all those neighbours who knew i was being abused, but never talked about it. Older siblings never knowing my father tried to murder me when i was 12,, my mother and 14 year old brother just in time to prevent him throwing me from the 4th floor balcony. Telling my sister of 80, i see in her eyes she does not believe me. Yet she can ask for confirmation by my brother. Learned that staying silent, not rocking the boat, the sweet peace, is easier. Just as most of us stay silent when it comes to the war in Syria or the threatening wars in Russia or Iran. So tired of it all.
