Victims of domestic violence are afraid, sad and angry, but may not know how to communicate those emotions to counselors or therapists who want to help, Elsey said. Incorporating a holistic approach to treatment of the mind, body and soul is the best way to connect with a survivor.
"Really this discussion about trauma-informed services is a marriage of us understanding the connection between our body and mind and the impact trauma has," said Mariann Kenville-Moore, director of policy for the Delaware coalition against domestic violence. "But also reconnecting with some real basic principles that have always existed in the helping profession."
