Drinking environment and partner violence

"The environment in which a person drinks may play a role in instances of domestic violence, new research has indicated. Published in the journal Addiction, the study found that while male violence is often linked to alcohol consumption away from the house, female violence is sometimes associated with imbibing at home....

"Many individuals with anger and aggression problems also have substance use problems.  This may be due to a third variable such as personality disorder or low self-control. In this paper they found however, that the relationship between IPV and alcohol held when they took in to account the individuals low self-control and adverse childhood experiences (a frequent feature in the childhoods of those who go on to develop personality disorders). This suggests aspects of alcohol are associated directly with IPV.  Alcohol intoxication can increase the risk of IPV through many mechanisms such as disinhibition, inaccurate assessments of consequences of violence and overreaction to perceived threat due to impaired thought processes...."
