In a city that often struggles with its public perception, less visible battles appear to plague Falls' youth.
Data collected by a 2015 behavior survey was presentated to the Board of Education at a meeting last month.
Falls teenagers proved safer than state averages in elective health behaviors, choices like smoking or handling weapons, Psychologist Michael Lewis, a grant coordinator in the district, told the Board of Education in January.
In "social-emotional needs, psychological issues, any kind of mental health area" students were "worse off."
The surveyed population â 2,383 students from Niagara Falls High School, Gaskill Preparatory and LaSalle Preparatory â ranked below state averages in drug, tobacco and alcohol use and also in the prevalence of students carrying weapons on school property, drunken driving and access to pregnancy prevention knowledge.
