One in 28 children has a parent in jail, according to the most recent numbers from the Pew Charitable Trust. Parental incarceration hurts a child’s ability to perform in school, make healthy decisions and cope emotionally.
Family Service of Roanoke Valley is starting a support group for middle school-age children with an incarcerated parent, called What About Me? The group will meet at Family Service’s offices at 360 Campbell Ave., S.W., on Tuesdays beginning Aug. 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. A light meal will be served, and a co-group facilitated by Families Anonymous will be held for caregivers.
