Findings from the First Ever National Survey of Juveniles in Custody

The first-ever national survey of youth in juvenile custody found that 30% of confined young people had experienced sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, 67% had seen someone killed or severely injured, and 70% reported that something bad or terrible had happened to them. Only 15% reported no trauma incidents in their past.

i am pretty sure that they all suffered from emotional abuse as i would define it. but i am guessing that the study didn't ask the questions i would have asked.

for those interested, here is my page on emotional abuse

anyhow, just seeing someone killed or witnessing violence is a form of emotional abuse itself. and in fact i would say any form of punishment is emotional abuse because as thomas gordon says it is intentionally hurting someone or depriving them of something they need.  i assume you get this since you are familar with non violent communication.

and i would guess they were all punished.

and i would also guess that all or nearly all of them were forced to go to government controlled schools, which i would say are definitely emotionally abusive in many ways.  so yeah, i would say one way or the other, or in multiple ways, they were *all* emotionally abused.

some people who were emotionally abused still become "successful" or "productive". some go to jail. others kill themselves.
