This entire article is good, but this quote stopped me.
"Having access to tertiary care mental health services, for example, is not a predictor of good outcomes," says Dr Perry. "It's about connection to community, culture, family."
And while he's speaking specifically about children in foster care I think this is true post-trauma and long into our healing.
"The first step is to help carers establish predictable, regular sleep and play routines, and a calm - and safe - environment.
The entire article is here and oh how I wish this was known and practiced in the talk-talk-talk therapy days. It's part of the reason peer support is so essential as is sharing, through making art and other safe ways to be real even while symptomatic. It's not easy, especially for those with developmental trauma who get years to decades of being shamed or silenced or cared for my people terrified of emotions and symptoms.
But it's not hopeless.
Here, this and all the places we have community - it matters.
