"Waikato [District Health Board] health workers have stepped up their identification of patients who are also victims of family violence, with a particular focus on pregnant women.....

"'The cultural shift has been remarkable,'' she said....

"Mrs Cowley said while hospital staff may have always noticed the signs, they were now being taught the tools to tackle it head on.

"There are five keys area they focus on - the emergency department and child, sexual, womens' and mental health....

"Mrs Cowley said the programme was about early intervention in order to reduce the huge impact family violence had on women and childrens' health...."
