HISTORIC MOMENT: Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Recovers Sacred Land in Superior, Wisconsin

Over one hundred years ago, the sacred burial grounds of the local Ojibwe people were taken from them. Their ancestor's remains were dug up and dumped in a mass grave in the corner of a Catholic cemetery.

This past week, that sacred land was returned to its people in a historic moment for northern Minnesota and Wisconsin people. The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was given the deed to the historic burial grounds on Wisconsin Point by Superior, Wisconsin officials, as well as the site of the mass grave near the Nemadji River by the St. Francis Catholic Church's board of trustees.

“Taking responsibility is difficult and not something we can do all the time, but something we can always work towards,” says Superior City Council President Jenny Van Sickle.

“So let this be an example of how we do this work in a good way. Where we see each other as human beings, where we honor the history and experiences and tell the truth so we do not repeat that history once again,” concludes Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, who is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe.

After 1988 U.S. Congressional Resolution #331 noted the role of the Iroquois 'constitution' in the development of our U.S. Constitution... I explored some of the history of the Iroquois 'constitution' ("Gayaneshagowa"-if I spelled it correctly) noted by one scholar (Elizabeth Tooker). The Iroquois spent 55 years 'editing' (reaching consensus) their constitution, and in 1150 A.D. Iroquois Women had the Rights to: Assert, Debate, Vote, and Declare War (I wonder if Susan B. Anthony's lifetime in the former Iroquois territory had an effect on her advocacy.) One provision of that constitution was it's provision for "Generational Review" [in lieu of a 'Supreme Court', but also seemingly to prevent 'Trans-generational Trauma'....].
