How to find the heart to forgive those who traumatized you as a child. [www.mindcare.us]

What is the definition of forgiveness? Bob Enright, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who pioneered the study of forgiveness three decades ago, defines true forgiveness as offering something positive, empathy, compassion, understanding, toward the person who hurt you.

What are some myths that people hold on to that hold them back from forgiving? Myth #1: Forgiveness means letting the person who hurt you get away with what they’ve done.

Truth: Forgiveness has absolutely nothing to do with the person who caused you hurt. It has everything to do with improving your well-being. https://www.mindcare.us/post/h...tized-you-as-a-child

Thank you for this! This can be such a sensitive subject in the world of trauma-recovery. I know for me PERSONALLY, forgiveness was a must. It released my soul from the heavy burden and brought peace and understanding. Once I took a step back and thought, "I wonder what HIS trauma story was?" and developed a curiosity of my perpetrators childhoods, it helped me forgive them. Not condone their behaviors, but perhaps understand their pain and behaviors.

Peace,

Teri
