Author and leading expert on the effects of stress on the body and brain Dr. Linda Chamberlain creates a mesmerizing tale that helps children regulate stress.
HOMER, ALASKA - A new children’s book, “Howling with Huskies: And Other Ways to Feel Good” is now available for free download and/or purchase. The book follows siblings Kimmo and Galena as they navigate strong emotions and, with the help of each of their sled dogs, learn tools for regulating each. The book aims to give kids easy ways to calm themselves using what is already at hand (and at paw!).
Howling with Huskies was born during a trip to rural Alaska, where Dr. Chamberlain noticed the need for simple tools and family resources for kids as they develop. She notes that the book combines traditional and Western knowledge, as many of the techniques have “deep roots in traditional practices and are supported by the latest science as effective strategies to build stress resilience skills and self-regulation.”
Equitable access is incredibly important to both Dr. Chamberlain and the sponsor of the book, Alaska Children’s Trust, which is why they have made access completely free for every family. Not only that, but there are printable resources and coloring sheets that correspond with the reading so that educators and parents can make it a fun and interactive experience. There is also a video of Dr. Chamberlain reading the book aloud for kids to tune into, Dr. Chamberlain Reading.
Following techniques in the book, kids are encouraged to "howl" through their emotions, which highlights various breathing techniques and works to increase the resources available for "Upstream" primary prevention work in Alaska's children and teens.
For those who do want a hard copy of the book, it can be purchased from several major booksellers including Barnes & Noble, and Amazon Reads, it may also be requested at local bookstores and libraries.
All proceeds from the sale of the book go towards the Alaska Children’s Trust, the only statewide nonprofit with the mission of preventing child abuse and neglect in Alaska.
