I am adopted.

I am adopted. I am grateful everyday my parents adopted me without knowing anything about me.

Today I received a "booklet" which features stories and photographs of children waiting to be adopted. Some of the things written are " Imagine your Thanksgiving meal- the love of a family, the joyful sharing of stories, the clinking of dishes as a mountain of mashed potatoes and turkey are piled high on plates. Did it make you smile? Then (insert child's name) is a perfect fit for your home. She loves all holidays."

WHAT?!?! My parents opened their hearts to me not knowing if I would love or hate holidays, if I would be a good or terrible student, not knowing anything EXCEPT I would be their daughter and loved unconditionally. Please let's stop advertising children as if they are rescue pets. Open your home, your hearts not for what you can get out of the deal, but for what you can give.

I am adopted too. Thank you for posting. It hurts my heart when I see how adoption is promoted. We are sensitive and scared and we need the parents who choose us to be willing to stick with us through not only the happy fantasies about adding a child, but during the painful moments when we don't trust and when we feel like the world is against us. We may fight with our new parents, but that is when we need them the most, and often that is the time they withdraw. You must have been blessed by empathy from your adopted parents. I didn't know what empathy was until I started treating others the way I wanted to be treated in my adult life. I now find myself fulfilled as I have adopted 4 kids who were wards of the system. I found that empathy healed them, and all the stigma and doubt that they would ever make it in a family is a glimpse of the past that once was. Now my kids futures have never looked brighter. They are all teenagers right now, and as other families don't know how to deal with kids in there teen years, we embrace it and against all odds. We are all survivors.
