Happy New Year! I'm very excited to share that I have launched Ambivalent Goddesses, a year long project devoted to recovery from sexual abuse. You can read the first post here.
A little bit about the project:
Ambivalent Goddesses is written for those who experienced sexual abuse and are struggling with its affects on their psychological and physical well-being, identity formation, relationships, sexuality, and personal empowerment. It is also for anyone who works with women who have histories of sexual abuse, or is supportive of a woman who is working towards her own recovery. The project takes a trauma-focused and depth psychological approach to understanding the impact of sexual abuse. It also examines how societal attitudes towards sexual abuse survivors influence how they suffer and how they recover.
Ambivalent Goddesses does not attempt to replace professional help, nor is the project solely about self-help. Rather, the focus is on self-wisdom. In my own recovery, I found that how I thought about the affects of sexual abuse was as important as what I did to alleviate them. Nevertheless, Ambivalent Goddesses provides lots of practical information and ‘how to’ guidance.
By making a substantial part of Ambivalent Goddesses a web-based project free to anyone with an internet connection, I hope to help those who need this material the most. Increasingly we go to the web rather than a bookshelf when confronted with a pressing issue. I did a lot of searching for answers on the web for my own recovery, often in the wee hours when there was no one I could talk to about what happened and how the abuse continued to impact me. Ambivalent Goddesses is the material I wish I had found when searching for answers and direction. I also know many don’t want to see a therapist, or can’t afford professional support, or can’t access the support they need, and they will take a more independent approach to recovery. I want this information to be available to all who might benefit from it. (Still, I encourage people to seek professional support!)
