Join us to learn why and how the "Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Act of 2023" will expand the US approach to mental health by using a public health approach in communities to build population mental wellness and resilience for stresses & traumas.

Accelerating global temperatures are producing cascading disruptions to the ecological, economic, and social systems people rely on for basic needs. The disruptions are combined with more frequent, extreme, and prolonged emergencies and disasters to produce a growing epidemic of mental health and psychosocial problems.

For many reasons our current mental health and social service systems cannot address today's scale and scope of mental health problems--and have no chance of preventing or healing the pervasive psychological, emotional, and spiritual suffering speeding our way.

The widespread traumas will threaten everyone's mental health, physical health, safety, security, and wellbeing. They will also generate more indifference about and even opposition to policies that help reduce the climate crisis to manageable levels.

An intensive 2+ year research project by the International Transformational Resilience Coalition (ITRC) found that to prevent and heal widespread climate distresses and traumas we must expand our approach to mental health to prioritize a public health approach to build population mental wellness and resilience in communities.

US Representative Paul Tonko (D-NY) grasped the need to fund and support communities that operate initiatives that use this approach and developed the landmark "Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Act of 2023" (CMWRA). The bi-partisan bill was introduced the week of May 2 in the US House by Reps. Tonko, Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Don Bacon (R-NE), Mary Peltola (D-AK) and Kathy Castor (D-FL). A companion bill was also introduced by Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Richard Blumenthal (CT), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) in the US Senate. Click here to see a summary and text of the legislation.

Participants in the June 7 webinar will learn:

  • The urgent need, core principles and practices, and many benefits of using a public health approach in communities to build population mental wellness and resilience for the climate crisis--and many other toxic stresses and traumas.
  • The specifics of the federal "Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Act of 2023", and how you and your organization can help move the legislation to enactment.
Why similar policies are needed at the regional, state, and local levels in the US and internationally, and how you can help make that a reality.

Please join us next Wednesday's June 7 for this important webinar!
