I know of at least three people — two have died as the result of their ACEs and addictions to food and alcohol — who have been adversely affected by that hole they just could not fill without food, preferably something sweet. I’ve fought that battle at times in my life too, when the “sweetness of life” seemed to be found only in ice cream, French toast, or some other comfort-food-of-the-year.

Toxic stress is a setup for food-as-comfort, obesity, Type II Diabetes (which often precedes Alzheimer’s Disease) and a plethora of other problems. Hypertension, kidney failure, strokes, etc. Obese African American women are at even greater risk due to genetic predispositions to heart conditions, kidney problems, and hypertension.  Good luck with your endeavor!

Hi Carey, I am sorry to hear about the loss of your friends due to ACEs related obesity.  Unfortunately ACEs related obesity is widely unrecognized and yes has devastating consequences for physical health, emotional health and can really get in the way of establishing and maintaining close intimate relationships.  Thanks for all your support!!! Mary

Wow, what an awakening!  I am working hard both personally and professionally to bring food to the forefront as part of the ACEs movement in my own community.  But what about my own home...and more importantly, my own heart.  This is a wonderful interview on the Crappy Childhood Fairy with Mary Giuliani, Life Coach.  YES, YES, YES!  Childhood obesity and PTSD is a real thing!  Food as a way to medicate and deal with childhood anxiety, toxic stress in the home, worrying about literally everything, wanting to be like by everyone...a chapter out of my own life.  The crazy yo-yo life of weight issues!  How to move past it and become better because of it!  Looking forward to hearing more!
