CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire Department of Education is partnering with The Regulated Classroom to assist educators throughout the state in preparing their students for learning and equipping educators with resources to reduce stress and dysregulation in the classroom.
“This new collaboration is aimed to support teachers who may be experiencing disruptions in their school environments, who today, are struggling with dysregulated students that have had inconsistent and disrupted instructional schedules going on two years, as well as the high stress level among the teachers themselves,” said Frank Edelblut, education commissioner. “It will also provide teachers with important tools and strategies to bring calmness and predictability back to their classrooms, which may also cultivate hope for educators who could be feeling overwhelmed.”
This week, the Governor and Executive Council approved an $815,400 contract between NHDOE and The Regulated Classroom, based in Peterborough, to develop resources for educators who are dealing with amplified dysregulation in their instructional environments, including diminished levels of impulse control, limited attention span, heightened levels of aggression, disinterest and poor motivation. This initiative is funded through the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief.
The Regulated Classroom is an approach to help deescalate adverse and confrontational circumstances and refocus students on academics by helping educators deepen self-awareness about stress activation. Developed by veteran New Hampshire school counselor Emily Read Daniels, The Regulated Classroom consists of a somatosensory toolkit and four kinds of classroom practices to regulate stress for teachers and students.
Through this partnership, about 2,500 toolkits will be made available to New Hampshire educators, as well as on-demand professional development and regional events for implementation and coaching.
“Teachers are hurting and students are hurting. They need meaningful resources to help heal and transform,” said Daniels. “We want to get our toolkit in as many hands as possible so that when teachers are in the moment, they can promptly regulate, engage, teach and connect. Making these resources available, for free, to New Hampshire educators is a positive step toward resilience and growth.”
