Open adoption allows Cedar Springs teen to live life of 'no secrets'

"The hardest part of the whole process was leaving the hospital without her," she said. "...But I received counseling and I had a great support system to help me. I want people to know that you do get help and support. It's not something that you have to deal with on your own."...

"As for the open aspect of the adoption, Jane said there is "no legal binding, just trust." While she acknowledges that the journey has had its ups and downs, ultimately, she wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, after adopting Hannah, the Ringlers adopted two boys and another girl, all of whom have open adoptions with their respective birth parents.

"I couldn't imagine doing a closed adoption after we had openness with Hannah," Jane said. "I knew it was healthier for them, so I had to try my hardest."...

"But for now, she works as a mentor to young girls and she recently began competing in pageants as a way to earn money for college. Her ability to speak to her platform of advocating adoption and youth mentorship, along with her ukulele rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," helped Hannah win the title of Miss Teen Heart of Michigan earlier this year.

"My platform is mentoring because I am surrounded by mentors every day of my life," she said. "...I truly believe that evolution comes with little seeds of ideas. One idea can change another person's life. In this instance, it changed the lives of three families, just from one little idea."
