Pandemic + Trauma + Relapse

It's been a while since I've written. I've been navigating some heavy shit! It's time we start to talk about the number of relapses that this pandemic has caused. Old traumas have been stirred up as the gound has been pulled out from underneath people and the result has been for many people to go back to the friend they have known the longest. For some who have ACE that led to addiction, that 'friend' has shown up for them, but unfortunately that friend doesn't live up to its name.

I know the pandemic has caused chaos and we are all still in collective grief from the way life was and navigating the way life is now. I'm curious though, where are the conversations around the opioid epidemic, the increase in weed sales (some 50% if I understand correctly), and how much alcohol is being sold in the US. It seems that the news likes to tell us, as though its something to celebrate, how great microbrews and distilleries are for making hand sanitizer and being there for the community but hold up... that just means the number of alcohol sales are on the rise so much that they can afford to also make hand sanitizer. Perhaps I am a bit to sensitive to this topic, but alcohol and drugs are killing more people than this pandemic yet its being praised. We know that a lot of drug and alcohol dependence come from ACE yet kids are now required to stay at home with potentially dangerous family members.

Needless to say, I am nervous about what the next 10-15 years looks like on the alcohol and drug front from the number of children who have experienced developmental trauma and been in volatile situations during this pandemic.

Thanks for listening! Would love your input!
