Pre-parenting curriculum for teens

If you are working with teens to plan bright futures, we would like to offer you a Sample Lesson Plan from our Healthy Foundations for Future Families curriculum.

For the past 10 years, our organization Educate Tomorrow’s Parents (ETP), has been working upstream to prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences by educating teens before they form families.  Our science-based curriculum meets essential standards for secondary school health education.  There are several components, including a student workbook My Life-Plan for Parenting.

We’ve had remarkable results. Nearly 8,000 teens in all kinds of settings – public school health education, alternative schools, private schools, foster youth programs, and juvenile justice programs - have participated in our programs.  Teachers, parents, and teens have embraced it.  Best of all - over 95% of teens we’ve instructed report they will be better prepared to provide, protect, and nurture their future family as a result of our program!

Now we want to share our instructional materials and training with people who are working with teens … so more teens can make healthy choices … more people will be prepared for parenthood … and more children can grow up free of maltreatment and family dysfunction.

Together we can proactively help teens create life-plans that will avoid ACEs for their future families. Imagine how healthy, productive, and happy our next generation of children will be.

To take a peek at our program and receive a Sample Lesson Plan, please send an email request to: info@eduparents.org

We look forward to helping you guide teens to create bright futures for themselves and for their future families.

In Sonoma County [CA] a similar version of My-Life-Plan focused on women of reproductive age - was used in a Perinatal Intensive Day Treatment Program.  It was a valuable tool for facilitating conversations that often included concrete next steps.  In addition, the ACEs screening questions responses, were built into their Seeking Safety program treatment plans.

Description copied from site linked above:

The First Steps Perinatal Program offers intensive outpatient services for pregnant and parenting women who have alcohol or other drug problems. A safe and nurturing environment supports a woman’s recovery with individual and group counseling sessions. Transportation is provided to and from treatment with co-op childcare, a nutritious snack and sessions covering topics centered around pregnancy and parenting and also include denial management, relapse prevention, coping skills, nutritional education, life skills, and developmental screening for participating children. Clients attend sessions daily Monday – Friday for an average length of 9-12 months.  Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm

I hope this is useful.

Thanks for sharing this resource information.  Our curriculum is quite different in that we are primarily educating teens in the general population - the vast majority of our students are not pregnant or parenting.  We are educating them in high school health education classes.  And our focus is on preconception choices and preparation: health behaviors, the benefits of postponing parenting until adulthood, healthy relationships, and understanding children's needs.  I'm glad to know there are also programs like the First Steps Perinatal Program.
