"As parents and as a community, we must do a better job of encouraging children to disclose abuse. In almost every case of abuse, the abuser tells the child to keep the abuse a secret and that family matters must be kept private.
"Abusers frequently threaten the child or the non-offending parent with harm if the child tells. Many children find it very difficult to disclose abuse despite the pain, anger and humiliation they experience. When children do muster the courage to disclose, we must believe them...."
