Preparing for Trauma Work in Clinical Mental Health / Our New Workbook

I heard one trauma survivor after another share horror stories about retraumatization from counseling experiences with clinicians that were not trauma-competent. This workbook, entitled, Preparing for Trauma Work in Clinical Mental Health: A Workbook to Enhance Self-Awareness and Promote Safe, Competent Practice.

It was written to address the education and training gap in lack of preparedness for trauma (especially complex trauma) work. It is uniquely designed to focus on the professional development and lived experience of the clinician. With a special emphasis on personal reflection, each chapter includes education on distinct aspects of trauma work in mental health, an assessment, a guide for supervisory discussion (faculty and site supervisors will love this!), and experiential activities that link personal reflection alongside the application of knowledge and skills.

We owe it to ourselves and our clients to become equipped to effectively work with clients impacted by trauma while also reducing our own risk for vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue. That is why Corie Schoeneberg and I co-created this resource.  We hope you find it useful. Below, please find more about our workbook and how it can be ordered.

I used this workbook in my preventative counseling course this semester, and the students loved it! Trauma-informed counselor education should be a required component to all mental health programs, and this is a simple tool to help each of us grow in our trauma-informed professional development.
