Prevention of child maltreatment - technical discussion at RC63 - WHO

"The new WHO report "European report on preventing child maltreatment" was presented at a technical briefing at the 63rd session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe on 17 September in Turkey. Approximately 50 participants attended the workshop. In the European Region, at least 18 million children under 18 years have suffered abuse. There are far reaching social and health consequences and deprived groups are at increased risk, but interventions to prevent abuse from occurring are cost-effective....

" ...There was unanimous support for the prevention of maltreatment and of the investment required to prevent the long term adverse health and social outcomes. There were irrefutable links to the life course approach and preventing adversity in childhood was thought to be an essential step to achieving equity. Health 2020 provided an essential over arching framework for the prevention of child maltreatment."
