Project offers hope for foster children - Arizona

"Sometimes hope can blossom into something beautiful. That’s what happened when a group of dedicated Valley women started a grass-roots effort to help children lingering in the Arizona foster care system. The result: Hope Village AZ, an intergenerational community of adoptive children who seek permanent “forever” parents and active older adults who will mentor and support the families....

"Similar communities have sprung up in Massachusetts and Oregon, Lanzon says, and she and members of the board have visited them. They hear the same comments at every site from families and seniors — how the community has been a lifesaver for them and how they have never felt so connected and safe.

“The seniors talk a lot about giving back,” says Judi Gross, a social worker who is on the board. For instance, they may have had a teaching career and can help tutor the children. They also serve as mentors and surrogate grandparents who help with baby-sitting and other tasks...."
