PTSD Is Not Invisible to Military Kids

"Everywhere you look these days, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is in the news, and rightly so. While most of the articles and research focus on the people who have PTSD, it’s important to remember that it also affects their spouses, kids, friends, and other family members. To them, PTSD is not an invisible injury.I’ve had the opportunity to learn from military kids what it’s like to live with a parent who has PTSD. Kids notice if a parent’s behavior changes after a deployment, and they want to understand why. They have their own process for understanding what’s happening to their parent and to their family. This process includes finding out what’s causing their parent to be jumpy, more irritated, distant, or unable to do fun activities they used to do. Tweens and teens will likely turn to the Internet to find explanations for why their parent is behaving so differently from before..."
