Addressing ACEs and Toxic Stress: Understanding CUES to Support Families and Patients
This pre-recorded webinar is the first in a three-part series developed by Futures Without Violence as part of the California ACEs Aware Core Training initiative (www.ACEsAware.org). It is an opportunity for health providers and support staff to learn about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, screening, risk assessment, and evidence-based care to effectively intervene on toxic stress. It will lay the foundation for sessions two and three, which focus on organizational readiness to address ACEs and leveraging conversations about ACEs to promote prevention, healing, and health equity.
Participants must attend all three sessions and complete all registration and evaluation forms in order to receive ACEs Aware certification. This pre-recorded session should be viewed before the live sessions taking place on November 15 and 17, 2021 (registration announcements for the live sessions coming soon).
Participants will be given access to an online portal with additional training resources (slides, handouts, etc.) upon registration.
The intended audience for this session includes providers and staff working in pediatric and primary care settings that will be implementing ACE screening. The training is available to any provider, but it is particularly geared towards primary care clinicians who serve Medi-Cal (Californiaβs Medicaid program) beneficiaries. Note: those who are NOT seeking ACEs Aware certification are welcome to attend any and all sessions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, participants will be better able to:
- Define Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their prevalence, health disparities in these data, toxic stress physiology, and related impacts on health, including underlying biological mechanisms.
- Identify how to introduce and integrate ACEs and toxic stress screening into clinical care, aligning with trauma-informed care principles.
- Apply the ACEs and Toxic Stress Risk Assessment Algorithm for assessing risk for toxic stress, which includes a combination of screening for ACEs, identifying presence and extent of ACE-Associated Health Condition(s), and protective factors, in determining an appropriately tailored treatment and follow-up plan, including referrals, if indicated.
- Identify the Medi-Cal payment requirements for administering ACE screening as a part of assessing for risk of toxic stress.
- Integrate lessons learned from the CUES evidence-informed approach that can be applied to ACE screening
