ATLANTA | One in six Georgians killed as a result of domestic violence in the last 10 years had sought help from a shelter or safe house, according to an in-depth review of fatalities conducted by prosecutors, social workers and other experts.
Thatβs one of the facts revealed in the 2013 Domestic Violence Fatality Review Report issued by the Georgia Commission on Family Violence and the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Since 2003, the two groups have conducted detailed reviews of a certain number of fatalities, going beyond demographic statistics to investigate the circumstances in the household leading up to the death.
Over that time, nearly 100 cases have been subjected to these intense reviews. Looking at all of them, the authors of the latest report identified some major elements that seem to correlate.
