Reporting ‘the whole story’: 9 good questions with David Bornstein of Solutions Journalism Network

I've always maintained that journalism and journalists need to be education about ACEs, trauma-informed and resilience-building practices. My profession is stuck in reporting about problems, and doesn't spend enough time on solutions. As David Bornstein, co-founder of the Solutions Journalism Network, says, "Problems scream; solutions whisper."

Bornstein and his colleagues at the Solutions Journalism Network are doing a little shouting about solutions, and encouraging journalists to do the same. Here's a terrific Q-and-A he did with Tom Rosenstiel, executive director of the American Press Institute.

....without concerted efforts, journalists will miss lots of quiet stories that have the potential to inject new information into the conversation about how to address problems. That’s why we feel that it’s useful to have a framework that explains why solutions journalism is not only legitimate, but necessary — if we want the news to be accurate and comprehensive.

The role of the Solutions Journalism Network is to help advance this framework and make it attractive for journalists to engage in this practice regularly. Our job is to accelerate learning about the practice and disseminate tools that make it doable at high quality on a daily basis and on deadline.
