Resiliency and Recovery from Intimate Partner Violence

"Complex trauma, the multiple traumatic episodes that occurred over a long period of time, can reduce a person’s ability to respond to perceived danger in a productive way.  In addition, how the trauma is perceived by one’s culture can impact the victim’s resiliency.  If a person receives consistent validation of the emotional and physical results of abuse and has family, community, and cultural support she is more than likely able to engage in activities that reduce the impact of the stress hormones that were engaged during the traumatic events.  However, if there is little support to stop the ongoing sexual, physical and emotional violence that is being perpetrated against her, she will continue to be under the influence of the activity that is occurring in her neural processes and will respond as if she is in constant danger...."
