Resilient Roots is an experiential Holistic Trauma-Informed Resilience Program that guides individuals on their wellness journey through integrated Artistic Expression, Breathwork, Yoga postures, Mindfulness, Nature & Connection.
We utilize the FRIENDS program, supported by the WHO, as a foundation for our CBT-based resilience-building techniques, which we then weave together with Indigenous ideology and Polyvagal Theory. By incorporating the Polyvagal Theory, we help participants understand and regulate their nervous systems, which is essential for wellness and resilience. Indigenous ideology promotes wellness as the harmonious balance of community, food, sleep, movement, land, sacred space, and ritual/ceremony, offering a new and trauma-informed approach to personal growth and emotional well-being.
Why Choose Resilient Roots?
🌱 Holistic & Science-Backed – A unique fusion of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Indigenous wellness principles.
🧘 Mind-Body Healing – Learn practical mindfulness, movement, and self-care techniques to reduce stress and build resilience.
🤝 Community & Connection – Engage in supportive group discussions and healing circles to foster deep, meaningful connections.
🌍 Nature & Ritual-Based Healing – Explore how land, ceremony, and sacred spaces contribute to emotional well-being.

Additionally, participants will explore the Seven Circles of Wellness, focusing on food, movement, sleep, ceremony, sacred space, connection, and land as pathways to healing. Each program module includes art directives, yoga postures, breathwork, and service-oriented community engagement prompts to ensure participants' well-rounded, integrative experience. Participants will also learn to integrate Indigenous grounding techniques, mindful daily routines, and foodway practices into a holistic healing approach.
What to Expect During the Program:
During both the workshop and full program, participants can expect a safe and supportive environment for exploration and growth. There will be a balance of educational content, experiential activities, and group discussions. We will utilize artistic expression, movement, and breathwork to deepen the learning experience. The goal is to create a space where everyone feels safe and empowered to participate at their own pace.
Meet the Creator of Resilient Roots
Resilient Roots was developed by Iya Affo, a sought-after international speaker, trauma educator, and Indigenous mindfulness practitioner whose expertise lies in translating modern neuroscience and Indigenous healing methods into accessible, day-to-day activities for trauma healing and resilience. She empowers individuals to incorporate these evidence-based practices into their daily lives, to rewire their brains and bodies, creating sustainable pathways to wellness and trauma integration.
Iya’s passion for trauma healing stems from her journey of self-discovery and her deep respect for the wisdom of Indigenous cultures. She believes that everyone can heal and thrive, and she is dedicated to providing the tools and support to make that possible.
Most recently, Iya collaborated with SAMHSA to produce their most current Trauma-Informed Approach document and has presented alongside Deepak Chopra, Dan Siegel, Gabor Mate, Thomas Hubl, Stephen Porges, Richard Schwartz, and others. She created Resilient Roots to provide individuals and communities with culturally inclusive, trauma-informed tools for building resilience and emotional well-being.
Iya’s work is rooted in the belief that healing is a journey of self-discovery, connection, and empowerment. Through this program, participants will gain practical strategies, creative expression opportunities, and somatic practices to support their healing and personal growth.
