When Heart Phoenix and Jeffrey Weisberg created the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding three years ago, they weren’t sure what would come of it.
Others didn’t know what it was all about. Peacebuilding? What’s that?
But in a short time, the nonprofit center has become the go-to organization for area law enforcement, judicial agencies, corrections facilities and others to try to help troubled children, mend broken families and improve relations between kids and cops.
“It has taken on a life of its own, for sure,” Phoenix said. “We started really small. One thing led to another.”
Now Phoenix and Weisberg hope to go global. They envision Gainesville and the center becoming a training headquarters so its programs can be replicated across the country and internationally.
