Seattle Swings Between Hounding The Homeless And Leaving Them Alone [NPR.org]

Americans are seeing more homeless camps, especially on the West Coast. A number of cities there have declared emergencies over the problem, and as they struggle to find solutions, an angry debate has broken out about how much tolerance should be shown to illegal camps that crop up in public spaces.

Earlier this month, that debate got a lot more urgent in Seattle, when a young homeless man who was camping along Interstate 5 was killed by a car that careened off the roadway. The "Homelessness Crisis", in Britain, noted in today's Guardian news, seems to be of a different variety, but certainly a significant factor there.

Our 'regional' Interfaith [Economic Justice committee] Project, discussed it last night during our "Moral Economy" agenda item, as we previously prompted a City Council committee to address this locally, during a well attended Public Hearing, rather than just evicting folks from City Lands...

The book, "Realms of Hungry Ghosts" by Gabor Mate, explains how Vancouver, BC is dealing with the homeless. The city hired an MD who has an office next to a former apartment complex where the homeless live. It hasn't ended the homelessness but it is helping in a very constructive way. I live in Walla Walla, WA and I was told our homeless population is over 1000. They are now in tents on a hill by the city golf course. Gabor Mate, MD lectures on this subject and I believe has wonderful advice for healthy solutions. I have been telling people about him and his book, I know his schedule is very full.
