I am speaking to a room of five hundred people recently and ask this question:
"How many of you struggle with self-regulation?"
I re-phrase it.
"How many of you struggle with emotional self-control, impulses, and feeling calm in your bodies?"
The entire room, minus 12 people, raise their hands.
"I'm terrible with self-regulation," says one young woman.
"I'm not too good at that either," says a fifty-something man.
"That's my weakness," another woman chuckles, then shakes her head.
A sea of faces grin in recognition.
What is self-regulation? And why is it so many of us don't have it?
