Senate backs program that would prevent childhood trauma [vtdigger.org]

The state Senate has approved a bill aimed at addressing the long-term health and social effects of severe childhood trauma.

The legislation, S.261, which now goes to the House, is designed to bolster the state’s support for children and families who have experienced “toxic stress.” Exposure to severe stress has been shown to alter brain chemistry and affect behavior.

A major provision of the bill is the addition of a new “director of prevention and health improvement” to the Agency of Human Services.

This is a step in the right direction.  It would be great if states would begin to give ACES questionnaires in families we serve in the Birth to 3 population and also make sure that each provider has completed an ACE and has the support to deal with the findings.  Then we would be getting our youngest, their families and other providers and parents.
