She Sells Sanctuary - article arguing for a constitutional right to rehabilitation, reparation and reintegration in Ireland

At page 32 of the Law Society Gazette published in October 2018, you will find my short piece which makes the case for a constitutional right to rehabilitation and reintegration in Ireland by invoking the "unenumerated rights" doctrine, applying the ACEs evidence to the criminal justice context. https://www.lawsociety.ie/glob...ber-2018-gazette.pdf

For those who are interested in reading a longer, more in-depth exposition of these arguments, drawing on David Wexler’s concept of therapeutic justice, here's a link to an article that was published in the Irish Criminal Law Journal https://www.researchgate.net/p...on_and_reintegration

Hi Jane,

I advised you via Twitter that I'd read through the article. Wow! Super important for sure. Certainly these issues are common around the world. Of course my thoughts are through a Law Enforcement lens. You mention training the correction officers and support staff etc. in trauma-informed practices. I love training Law Enforcement and see the Ah-Ha moments they go through including reflecting back to my many ones. This is just the time of the Iceberg, when we go back to the everyday grind those Ah-Ha moments fade quickly and need reinforcement.

I'm in no way an academic and I'm learning a ton. But it seems like as I learn about mindfulness and applying that skill to Law Enforcement everything else falls into place including compassion etc.

Thanks for the heads up on your article!!

Justin
