Simple techniques can help children with stress

"Start with finding the cause, but parents need to deal with their own problems first....

"Lupien said there are four ingredients which are like a recipe for stress: the newness or novelty of a situation, the unpredictable nature of a situation, a threat to the ego, and a sense of low control.

"Experts use the acronym NUTS to refer to the four ingredients, and have developed techniques meant to give children more awareness of their stressors, plus tools to help them feel like they have more control. A sense of control is especially important for anxious children.

“Anxious children have a fear of being scared. Anxiety is the anticipation of stress,” she said.

"Lupien emphasized that parents experiencing their own stress aren’t much help to their children until they find ways to cope with their own problems. From age six to age 12, children are super sensitive to their family environment...."
