Social supports build resilience and reduce distress after trauma

In the aftermath of the recent hostage situation in Sydney, Kim Felmingham - clinical psychologist and neuroscientist at the University of Tasmania – describes the importance of social networks and a sense of community to pull people in the direction of resilience and out of the trauma and potential consequences of those experiences.  Global and local events can have serious consequences for individuals and communities, but the support from those around you can play an incredible role in healing.  Additionally, the author also highlights the role that media plays or does not play in the prevalence of trauma symptoms among communities and individuals; an interesting point with the age of technology and social media in which we live.
