Southern California Learning Community Convening

Thank you for joining us on June 21, 2018 for A Collaborative Model for Success: Magnolia Community Initiative

 The SoCal Learning Community was so pleased to showcase the Magnolia Community Initiative (MCI) at the convening last week. With over 70 partners of residents, and public and private organizations, MCI covers a 5-square mile/500 block catchment area that includes 35,000 youth and children in Los Angeles. 

 MCI is improving outcomes for an entire community of vulnerable, low income children through transformational strategies that include fostering empathy within neighborhoods and organizations, strengthening protective factorscultivating a community network lead by passionate parent/resident leaders, and promoting civic engagement

 An MCI panel generously shared about successes, challenges and learnings that their collaborative work has generated. The panel included:

    • Staff working alongside families and communities

 

How Magnolia Community Initiative Overcomes Challenges

  • Passionate, committed parent/resident leaders serve as community ambassadors and provide outreacheducation about resources and

insight into what the residents need

  • MCI partners listen and take action when the community speaks
  • MCI leadership embraces the effort to broaden and create a shared definition of community engagement
  • Recognize and respect the expertise and value of volunteer parent/resident leaders and ambassadors
